Book NowAbout Happy Chef Noodle Restaurant
Head up to the Sussex Centre food court for Sydney's long-running temple of noodle soups. Bowls hit tables in minutes, anchored by a traditional wooden peg ordering counter that has kept Chinatown regulars fed for decades. Devotees line up for the combination laksa—a rich, restorative coconut broth packed with wontons, chicken, and seafood. Noodle customization runs across the entire board, from thin vermicelli to wide flat ribbons with springy chew. For an off-menu feel, the dry noodle bowls toss braised beef tripe and tendon in dark gravy, flanked by satay sauce and clear broth to ladle in as you slurp.
- Restorative Laksa: Rich, coconut-based combination bowls with seafood, chicken, and wontons, famous among regulars as an antidote for rough mornings.
- Custom Dry Noodles: Tossed beef tripe, tendon, and dumplings served with separate bowls of clear broth and satay sauce.
- Chinatown Heritage: A bustling Sussex Centre institution running on decades of history and old-school wooden peg order numbers.

Before you head over
Practical advice on finding the counter, customizing your order, and navigating peak food court hours.
Finding the Stall & Seating
The stall is located on the upper-level food court inside Sussex Centre, which can look like an office entrance from the street and can get very crowded during peak lunch and dinner hours. Visit slightly off-peak to easily find a table.
Customize Your Noodle Style
When ordering your bowl, you can customize your dish by selecting your preferred noodle type, such as thin egg noodles, wide flat egg noodles, or rice noodles, to match whether you prefer soup or dry sauces.
Fast Counter Service
Food court seating is communal and drinks must be purchased separately from other vendors, but counter preparation is extremely rapid—often serving steaming hot bowls within three to five minutes.
