About Jugemu & Shimbashi

Military Road fades the second you take off your shoes and slide into a horigotatsu sunken table. Jugemu & Shimbashi channels Osaka tavern life with dual specialties: fresh soba made in-house and savory okonomiyaki seared crisp off the teppan. Regulars order the buckwheat noodles cold—firm, springy, and dunked into chilled tsuyu alongside light, greaseless tempura and freshly grated real wasabi. On the griddle side, the Jugemu special arrives layered with crispy pork belly, tender seafood, and shredded cabbage. Skewered kushikatsu and sweet seared scallops round out the spread, while cold draft beer cuts through the richness.

  • Handmade Soba: Noodles made fresh on premises daily, served cold with dipping broth or warm with tender duck and mushrooms.
  • Teppan Okonomiyaki: Osaka-style savory cabbage pancakes griddled crisp with pork belly, seafood, and rich sauces.
  • Horigotatsu Seating: Traditional sunken floor seating offers a calm, transportive Japanese dining setting.
  • Real Wasabi: Dishes feature genuine grated wasabi root rather than standard tube paste.

  • Agedashi Tofu

The agedashi tofu ($13.5), was actually a highlight for me, and probably the best I’ve ever had. The tofu was freshly fried, so it had a nice crispy batter to it.

  • Japanese Scallops

The scallops were great as they were sweet and had a nice tender, but springy bite to it. It had a nice sear to it on the outside as well.

  • Snowball Mochi Ice Cream

I also thought the “I 💗 Snowball” (mochi ice cream) dessert was fantastic! I loved the black sesame flavour (it was distinct but not overly strong) and the mochi skin was so stretchy and chewy!

  • Sesame Tofu

The Sesame Tofu is a unique, understated but surprisingly good opening dish and we wish we could get a bigger portion
