Book NowAbout Juan Bowl & Tea
Sydney donburi purists swear by this calm Redfern corner for rice bowls built with unhurried precision. No sprawling menus here—just a tight run of four or five signatures from an open kitchen. Regulars lean toward the wagyu bowl, layered over seasoned rice with an onsen egg, crispy lotus root, and beetroot miso, or crisp tonkatsu set over dashi-rippled eggs. Each dish pairs with a designated brew, matching rich beef with milky oolong or aromatic hot teas in lieu of wine. For dessert, bitter matcha tiramisu arrives in a traditional wooden masu box alongside black sesame warabimochi steeped in kuromitsu. The dining room holds only a handful of tables, making an advance reservation practical.
- Artisanal Donburi: A focused menu centered on four to five signature bowls, from tender wagyu with onsen egg to crisp tonkatsu and unagi.
- Curated Tea Pairings: Dishes are matched with specific artisan loose-leaf brews, including milky oolong and Black Pagoda, acting as a non-alcoholic pairing.
- Masu Box Desserts: Matcha tiramisu served in a wooden masu box alongside glutinous black sesame warabi mochi finished with kuromitsu.
- Intimate Redfern Space: A compact, calm dining room centered on an open kitchen where tables fill quickly.

Wagyu Don
The wagyu was really tender and sat nicely over seasoned rice, with an onsen egg, crispy lotus root, herbs, and a touch of beetroot miso. Everything worked well together and didn’t feel too heavy.
Daniel K Tonkatsu Don
Tonkatksu light and fluffy
Louie Nguyen Unagi Don
The other dish was an omelette rice bowl with a fluffy tamagoyaki-style omelette over eel and rice, finished with some grated cheese. It was comforting and surprisingly satisfying.

Daniel K Black Sesame Warabi Mochi
Shockingly, the Warabi Mochi took the crown — and this is coming from someone who is usually a die-hard Tiramisu girl! Both desserts had the perfect level of sweetness, and the jelly-like, glutinous texture of the Mochi was spot on.
