Sydney · Where to Stay in Sydney

Where should a first-time visitor stay in Sydney for sightseeing and food?

I want an easy base for the harbour and public transport, but I would rather spend more of my budget on meals than on a room with a view.

I would pay for a harbour-view room only if the view itself is a priority. Wynyard or Town Hall keeps the trains useful and lets you visit Circular Quay and The Rocks on a dedicated harbour day. Then spend an evening eating in a different neighbourhood instead of staying around the same expensive address. Compare the total room cost and your likely return trip after dinner, not just the headline nightly rate.

For a family, the area around Central can work well because you have trains, groceries and casual meals close together. Check the precise street rather than relying on a suburb name: a room that looks close to a station on a map may still mean a long or awkward walk with bags. If you need a lift, step-free route or separate beds, confirm those details before comparing the price with a hotel by the harbour.

The Rocks and Circular Quay are convenient for a first visit: you can walk to the harbour icons and board trains or ferries nearby. They can also carry a premium. If you value access more than the view from your room, compare hotels around Wynyard, Town Hall or Central before paying for a waterfront address.

For a stay built around cafes and dinner, Surry Hills near Central is a strong alternative; Newtown gives you a different inner-city food scene with a short train ride into the centre. Check the actual walk from the room to a station, the last leg after dinner, and the total price. A cheap room that adds a long transfer every day is rarely a saving.
