Sydney · Where to Stay in Sydney

Is an apartment a better base than a hotel for a family visiting Sydney?

We need room to spread out and want to keep some meal costs down. What should we check before booking?

Map an apartment against both a station and a supermarket, then imagine the journey home after a full day out. Simple breakfasts and an occasional dinner in can make a family stay easier, while leaving room for the Sydney meals you came to enjoy. If the apartment is far from transport, a smaller central hotel with casual food nearby may be the simpler choice despite a higher room price.

Ask what the advertised kitchen and laundry actually include. A 'kitchenette' might not let you cook the meals you have in mind, and cleaning or linen fees can change the real price. For younger children, confirm the lift, cot and permitted occupancy rather than assuming a large-looking room works for everyone. Those practical details matter more over several nights than an attractive living-room photo.

An apartment can be excellent when separate beds, a usable kitchen and laundry matter more than daily hotel service. Before booking, check the actual bed configuration, whether the kitchen has more than a microwave, the cleaning and cancellation terms, and whether a lift or step-free entry is needed. Photos of a large living room do not tell you how well four people will sleep.

For a short first trip, put the address on a map and test a typical day: groceries, a station, your main sights and the journey home when everyone is tired. A central apartment with a supermarket nearby can make breakfast and one easy dinner flexible, while leaving room in the budget for meals you really want to go out for.
