Do I need to reserve a regular train from Sydney to the Blue Mountains?

Build in a backup for disrupted service and verify the last convenient return. A day trip works best with one or two nearby villages or lookouts, not a long checklist.

Use the official transport journey planner for your exact date and station, including planned trackwork. Leave early enough to have daylight for your chosen walk.

First check whether you are viewing a regular suburban/intercity service or a bookable long-distance train. The two systems can look similar in search results.
